TCB Review: Out with the old, in with the New Calhoun Grill: the former Hell's Kitchen spot has been filled by the Calhoun. Of course, it not really new-new, since the Calhoun Grill used to be down on West Lake Street by, well, Lake Calhoun. And everything on the menu can be ordered up at places like the Louisiana Grill, Woodbury Cafe, Uptown Diner or Grandview Grill.
The physical space is hard not to compare against the former decor -- and it comes off feeling tad generic. Now that I think of it, that's how the menu comes off as well. But again, I think that's because the exact same food can be found at several other spots around town. That said, they do have a nice listing of benedicts, and overall, they put together a solid breakfast (and have got their hashbrowns down).
More than anything, it's just over priced. Most of the plates on the menu are $9.95. The perennial favorite Cajun Breakfast is $9.95 -- but go ahead and add Andouille sausage for another $4.25. But this is a huge plate of food, so maybe it makes sense to split it with your pal. For that, add $2.00 . . . so we're talking over $8.00 for a half plate.
That's just silly. I won't pretend to be an expert in restaurant economics, but I know as a consumer, I'm not paying more just to split something. The convention/hotel crowd may, and I think I'll leave this spot for them.

From: Karen 05/06/2010 | 4 of 5 Huevos | This place closed in the Summer of 2009. Not sure why; Not enough business I guess which is too bad because the lunches were great.
