TCB Review: I suppose I’ll lose a couple style points for kicking a breakfast spot when it’s down – or rather, altogether out. But sweet Jesus was Sweet Loraine’s a bad breakfast joint; even as a hole-in-the-wall greasy spoon they didn’t do greasy right. So its replacement – the new Citizen Café – didn’t really have to do much to be an improvement. But as it is, from all appearances the Powderhorn Community has scored big.
I can count on one hand the number of casual, inexpensive breakfast cafes in this town that can tell you where their eggs and meat came from other than, “uh . . . the back of a Sysco truck (?)” – or how long ago they squeezed the oranges for the o.j. and which Wisconsin creamery the cheese came from. The Citizen Café staff can, and his means quality, fresh ingredients in the dishes – whether it’s the very solid house made granola ($5.00), create-your-own scrambles ($6.00+), very excellent pulled-pork, potato, beet and blue cheese hash (!) ($7.00), cheddar-chive biscuits and white sausage gravy ($5.00) or the fried egg and awesome sage sausage on ciabatta sandwich ($6.00).
My gut reaction – pun noted – is that the portions are a bit small. But for what is being served – and for the price – it’s right on. Besides, I have to remind myself that being stuffed into submission by piles of cheap food – something those other places rely on – will only get me so far, like to the couch for a 10am nap.
I’m not sure if there’s supposed to be meaning behind the name of the Citizen Cafe, but this spot looks a lot like what the people need.

From: Jozie 02/08/2009 | 2 of 5 Huevos | Ordered the breakfast chicken hash - very small amount of chicken and small cubed potatoes resembled frozen bag taste and quality. I don't think this was a good value and heartiness factor wasn't there. Also, it would help if servers knew what type of coffee they're pouring - dark roast or light roast? Food arrived quickly and our server was attentive and pleasant.

From: Northstop 12/14/2008 | 5 of 5 Huevos | Well, we came back after five months to see if the Citizen Cafe could achieve the rarified distinction of five Huevos. The breakfast club, down to only two due to family obligations, wandered in and got won over. The place is still in the middle of breakfast no-man's land and on a dreary rainy December morning, it was like a little oasis of goodness.
Starting with the charming Angela and her whale sweater serving both top-shelf coffee and snappy banter and ending with outstanding steak/eggs and corned beef hash...the Citizen Cafe delivered and easily earned its fifth huevo.
The overall vibe is a bit left of center but when it comes to breakfast, there is no political issue which can withstand excellent hash browns and a warm, inviting vibe which is the essence of what breakfast needs to be. I don't care if they are Communists or secret Young Republicans.....they serve an excellent breakfast.

From: Sara 09/27/2008 | 5 of 5 Huevos | Wow, I love this place. I finally got there this morning for breakfast and I was so impressed. First, we arrived at 10am and there was no wait. That in itself is amazing. Then, everything on the menu was under $10, and most things well under $10. I ordered the standard--two eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and meat (ham). It was great. The hashbrowns were not greasy, the ham was not overly salty, the eggs were perfectly over medium, and it came with homemade ketchup and a small serving of quickbreads with homemade jam for the table to share. I thought the portions were more than adequate, although not Perkins-huge. My companions ordered the veggie hash, the pulled pork hash, and one of the scrambles. They all enjoyed their meals. Also, the coffee was DELICIOUS. I am so excited about this place! I feel like I have finally found a nice, affordable place to go out to dinner and on top of that it also does a kick-a$$ breakfast!

From: Northstop 07/13/2008 | 4 of 5 Huevos | The Citizen Cafe is a welcome addition to the SE Minneapolis breakfast scene. Located at the now-closed Sweet Lorraine's, it stands nicely with Caps, Victors, the always-closed Colossal Cafe and a myriad of light fare coffee shops found in the usually dead eating zone known as 38th Street South.
The one page menu gives a variety of quality choices and combines it with tasty coffee resulting in an upper tier slot within the breakfast eateries in Minneapolis. The steak and eggs (b-club member expert ranks it #2, behind the Downtown Keys - heady stuff indeed), sage pork patties, scrambles and pancakes are very good with the hash browns standing out. Nice additions include a free scone/breakfast cake sampling, a sensible inside dining area, homemade ketchsup/catsup, hip but polite wait staff and narrow but nice patio.
We can always use another nice place for breakfast, especially in South Minneapolis, and once you get past the VERY generic building structure in the middle of a generic metro corner, it is very good and worth a second and third visit.
