Ike's Food and Cocktails

Had breakfast there May 14, and found it to be a rather disappointing experience.

Maybe it was because I was alone, but the server initially wanted to seat me at the bar even though there were plenty of open high-tops and booths. When I asked for a high-top, her reaction was along the lines of, "Well I guess I can have one cleared." We settled on one of the clean, empty booths.

Ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. After 15 minutes, had to ask how it was coming along, and was told the corned beef's prep time was one of the longest on the breakfast menu. She also told me I didn't tell her I was in a rush. Not that I was, or assumed I had to tell her.

Food finally came five minutes later, and lord knows why it took so long because it looked and tasted like it'd just come out of a can of Mary Kitchen's.

Naw, if you're downtown, go to Key's or Peter's or FireLake. Ike's just ain't worth it.

The best biscuts & gravy we've had around town with big chunks of sausage in the gravy. Awesome big fluffy omelts with lots of flavor. Good bacon if you ask for it "crispy". Hash browns are a perfectly crisp and a tad on the greasy side (in a good way). Huge, yummy cinnamon rolls are enough to share. Great service. We've heard they are opening a second location at the corner of Hwy 13 and Cliff. Can't wait!

Harry's Cafe

A sports bar that serves breakfast on the weekends and does a great job with their creamy hashbrowns that are heavy, rich and crunchy. They try to be a bit more upscale than a greasy spoon with the menu, but the decor was generic sports bar that seemed like they were trying too hard to be something more. It wasn't busy which is nice that there is no wait to be seated (we were ther on a Sunday 10:00 a.m.). Portion size was huge for the price with the exception of the side order of bacon being only 2 slices. Granted, the bacon is super thick cut and very smoky flavored but 2 slices just isn't enough. The egg/spinach/cheese/bacon wrap was awesome and jam packed with bacon. It came with hashbrowns The biscuts & gravy were just okay; they seemed to have a cream of mushroom soup base to the gravey. I wish they had waffels. Their egg sandwich on ciabatta bread looked good and if we go back I'll try that next time.

Windmill Cafe

A great greasy spoon diner with awesome bacon and hashbrowns. The biscuts & gravy are pretty good and the portion sizes are just right - not too big, not too small. You leave feeling satisfied without feeling over stuffed. I thought the omlet prices were a tad high at nearly $8.00. They come with toast & hash browns. Had to order bacon on the side making it a $10 breakfast. I wish they had waffles but the other menu items make up for it. The staff are warm & welcoming and the crowd friendly folks, some who looked weather-worn like they've worked hard all their lives. A down-to-earth no frills place situated on a dirt parking lot but super friendly with great food. We will be back for the bacon for sure. Note that the phone number listed on this site is wrong (check phone book for correct phone), and mapquest puts them in Canada (oops). They are in Savage, MN just west of 35W on Hwy 13. And they've painted their building beige - no longer blue like in the photo posted here.

Colossal Cafe

Everything is good at Colossal, if it's busy be patient and check out the cute shop across the street. Be sure to support local businesses, they need our support and keep the neighborhood bustling. I love Colossal especially the decadent pot pie and the unique clothing and gifts @ Diva Rags. These business owners have great customer service. I'll have to stop through this neighborhood more often!

Town Talk Diner

Well, I had higher hopes for the place after missing several opportunities to eat there but once I did eat there, I left squarely on the middle of the fence.

The Town Talk Diner (TTD) looks like a funky old place with a nice breakfast selection but once you peel back the facade, you got a high-toned place a bit too smart for its own good. The TTD has a brunch-based, narrow menu with slightly above average coffee but when it is all said an done, the TTD gets a 3.

On the upside: nice wait service focused on keeping your coffee/water full, a fun little building which separates the counter from the dining room and decent food. On the downside, the food looks better than it tastes, the ten menu choices are not exactly a breakfast festival of choices and the prices are high.

I doubt if I go back as I feel like the TTD wants to be viewed as authentic, old school and genuine but in reality, it has a high-toned vibe and a extra helping of self-esteem and ego.
